Stream Selection

In many parts of the country parents and students have historically shown a preference for studying Science compared to Arts, Humanities or Commerce. Presumably this has to do with more secure employment opportunities of Engineers and Doctors – which was prevalent in the scarcity economy of the pre internet era of India. Since integration of our economy with the world economy in the nineties and enabled by various technologies including internet and e-commerce at the turn of the century – Indian economy has undergone huge transformation. One of the many positive outcomes of this has been creation of numerous jobs in the nation’s services sector.

It is therefore not necessary for a person to be an engineer or doctor to find well paying jobs with bright future. However liberalization and globalization of our economy – also meant increased and free competition for products and services alike – is offering choices to consumers. The business organizations are therefore having to continually improve their manufacturing and business processes to remain in business. This in turn has raised the standard of employee output and quality of that output. The strategy for success in this new reality therefore is not entering certain chosen stream of study – but to excel in whatever stream one chooses. The industry and employers are likely to be less and less friendly to low performers – leading to stagnation and even forced exit. Therefore someone with low numerical skill should pursue Arts or Humanities. This can lead to various fields of study such as Law, Psychology or Design – leading to very successful and satisfying career. On the other hand even though one might have high numerical ability – trying to be a software programmer or data scientist – may be frustrating unless one has the necessary personality make, to be working alone for long hours in front of a computer screen. It is therefore important that a student chooses a stream – for which one has the intrinsic ability to acquire the desired skills and knowledge, one has a liking for this, and one’s personal disposition supports this kind of activity. Through psychometric testing – it is possible to discover the hidden qualities and disposition of a person and therefore decide the best stream of study.
